Social housing facing its biggest challenges ever

The social housing sector is facing its biggest challenges ever on the back of welfare reform and the UK’s generic housing crisis.

That’s the view expressed by experts from the Welsh social housing sector who gathered at an event organised by law firm Clarke Willmott LLP intended to provide updates as well as recent and upcoming regulatory changes affecting housing providers.

Taking place at the Cardiff & Vale College, those in attendance heard from specialist social housing lawyers from the firm as well as keynote speaker Amanda Davies, chief executive of Pobl Group, who explored the challenges and opportunities facing social landlords.

Attended by Welsh registered providers including Melin Homes, Bron Afon, Linc Cymru, Merthyr Tydfil, Pobl Group, Rhondda, Taff Housing, United Welsh, and Wales and West, the conference included updates on development, planning, asset and housing management, regulation, and funding.

Vicky Kells, head of Clarke Willmott’s Cardiff office and specialist partner in social housing finance said: “We have held housing conferences across Britain but it was great to be able to engage with our Welsh clients in this way and focus on issues specific to the social housing sector in Wales.

“Lots of important and interesting discussions came up throughout the day. We heard from Amanda Davies at Pobl Group who said the social housing sector will have to overcome some really big challenges so that it can provide the housing people need.

“She also advised that it’s time to rethink our business models, rethink our offer to our customers and challenge the status quo.  Becoming more efficient and more open must form part of our DNA.”
