Karbon Homes starts work on second phase of affordable housing scheme in Chester-le-Street

Newly-established housing provider Karbon Homes has started work on the second phase of an affordable housing scheme in Nettlesworth, Chester-le-Street.

Phase two of The Green includes 19 two-bedroom homes for rent and is an extension of an existing development of 24 homes that were completed in March 2015.

The £2.27 million second phase is being delivered by contractor Galliford Try Partnerships North East on land transferred by Durham County Council.

Karbon Homes was formed through a merger of Cestria Community Housing and Isos Housing with Derwentside Homes and started trading as one business earlier this month.

The Homes and Communities Agency has awarded a grant of £608,000 for the scheme, and the new energy efficient homes will include features such as improved thermal efficiency of walls, windows and roofs, and waste recycling measures.

Zoey Hawthorn, assistant director of development and property at Karbon Homes, said: “This is a significant milestone for Karbon Homes as we are committed to providing much-needed, high quality affordable homes for local families across the North East.  Our aim is to build more than 500 new homes each year to rent or buy and this is one of our first schemes to get underway.

“There was high demand for these properties after we completed phase one and we are confident this scheme will be just as popular”.

Sara Holmes, development director with Galliford Try Partnerships North East, said: “We are delighted to be working again with a valued partner – albeit Karbon is now a larger and more influential organisation in the sector. We share its aims of improving the quality and choice of homes of all tenures across the region”.

Phase two of The Green is expected to be completed early 2018 with new tenants expected to be moved in during early spring.
