Ashford Borough Council grants planning approval for 160 homes on the former West Kent College campus site

Ashford Borough Council has granted planning approval for a development of 160 homes on the former West Kent College campus site in Jemmett Road, Ashford.

Properties at the £30 million scheme from housing association Orbit and Chartway Group, will range from starter homes to larger family houses. These include 25 rented, 50 shared ownership and 55 outright sale homes from Orbit, with a further 30 outright sale homes from Chartway Group’s residential brand, Westerhill Homes.

The development will deliver improvements to the public footpath which runs through the site, known as the ‘learning link’ as well as undertaking extensive landscaping and tree planting.

West Kent College is relocating its campus to a new multi-million-pound, purpose built premises in Elwick Road, Ashford town centre, which was part-funded by the sale of the Jemmett Road campus.

Building work on phase 1 is expected to commence later this summer, with a phased demolition of the current college buildings to begin in September after students have moved across to the new Elwick Road campus.

Shina Olalekan, deputy head of development at Orbit said: “Our proposals demonstrate Orbit’s commitment to investing in and building communities. This development will create more housing options to meet the needs and aspirations of people living in Ashford and we look forward to working with local partners on this regeneration.”

Tim McLoughlin, projects director at Chartway Group added: “Chartway is keenly aware of its roots in Kent communities and this high-quality scheme will deliver a range of much needed housing for the local area, as well as revitalising and enhancing the land.”
